Collection: Jennifer Willet

Jennifer Willet is a Canadian artist, performer, researcher and curator in the international art/science community.  She is an innovator in the field of bioart, merging artistic and biotechnological research towards research/creation that uses living media (cells, plants, microbes) in the production of artworks. 
Willet’s solo exhibition tour, When Microbes Dream toured to 4 locations, Kapelica Gallery (2021) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Ectopia: Experimental Art Laboratory (2022) in Lisbon, and i3S (2022) in Porto, Portugal. Returning to Canada at The Reach (2023) in Abbotsford, BC, managed by IOTA Institute. Willet's work has also been exhibited at Ars Electronica festival, Linz (2022, 2008), University of Waterloo Art Gallery (2020), Arnolfini Museum, Bristol UK (2010), Exit Art Gallery, New York, NY (2009), , FOFA Gallery, Montreal (2007), ISEA San Jose, USA (2006), Biennial Electronic Arts Perth Perth, Australia (2004), The European Media Arts Festival Osnabrück , Germany (2003), La Société des arts et technologiques (SAT) Montreal, Canada (2005), and The Forest City Gallery London, Canada (2004), amongst others.  She has conducted residencies at Ontario Culture Days (2024), Foundations Lab ay Pratt Institute (2022), Open Space Gallery (2016), The Arctic Circle, Svalbard Norway (2014), The Banff Centre for the Arts Banff, Canada (2002, 2007, 2009), and SymbioticA, The University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia (2004, 2006).
Willet holds a PhD from Concordia University in Interdisciplinary Humanities Program, and an MFA from the University of Guelph. She has taught in Studio Arts at Concordia University, at the Art and Genomics Centre at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, and now works as an Associate Professor in the School of Creative Arts at The University of Windsor.  
Willet is a Canada Research Chair in Art, Science, and Ecology, and a Professor in the School of Creative Arts at the University of Windsor and the Director of INCUBATOR Art Lab, founded in 2009.  She is a member of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists in the Royal Society of Canada.  In 2018, She opened a new state-of-the-art bioart laboratory, and in 2020 a storefront bioart studio and community engagement centre. She lives in Windsor, Ontario with her spouse and two children.
